PRESIDENT'S BUDGET REQUEST FOR FY 2007 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The president's budget request for Fiscal Year 2007 included $64 billion for information technology, with $30 billion earmarked for the Department of Defense and nearly $34 billion for civilian agencies. The Departments of Health and Human Services and Homeland Security are slated to receive a combined total of nearly $10 billion. The largest gainers were Corps of Engineers and USAID.

The budget request, submitted to Congress, does not provide detail for IT outlays at Defense. The actual budget may vary from the president's request: For example, the initial request for FY 2006 was $65 billion but later reduced to $62.5 billion. The OMB spreadsheet provides additional detail. A summary of the budget from the OMB website follows.

The National Gallery of Art continues to be a joy for Elena and me. Cézanne in Provence opened in early 2006, and it is the Gallery's principal international exhibition marking centenary of the death of Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). A key figure in the impressionist and post-impressionist movements, he is often seen as the father of modern art. I visited the Gallery on my first trip to Washington many years ago, and it continues to be a delight.

Best wishes,
