PRESIDENT'S BUDGET REQUEST FOR FY 2008 INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY
The
president's budget request for Fiscal Year 2008 included
$65 billion for information technology, with $31 billion earmarked for
the Department of Defense and nearly $34 billion for civilian agencies.
Two Departments--Homeland Security and Health and Human Services--are
slated to receive 31% of the IT allocation for civilian agencies ($9.7
billion). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Small Business
Administration have the greatest percentage gains between FY 2007 and
FY 2008, although their overall budgets are relatively small. Treasury
was the largest gainer in terms of budget dollars (from $2.397 billion
in 2007 to $2.957 billion in 2008), an increase of $650 million.
We have developed a budget change index: Reductions greater than 10%
are shown in red,
and increases greater than 10% are show in green. The
first index column compares the 2008 to the 2007 request, and the
second index column compares 2008 to 2005. Costs
are in constant dollars and have not been adjusted for inflation.
